Default It's that time of year.. water pump impeller replacement time.

I purchased a used boat last year with a 90hp Mercury on it. I'm going to replace the water pump impeller myself and I am gathering prices.

I'm finding that a lot of these kits want you to buy the whole package. This includes the housing and everything. It's looking to be over $100. I would prefer to just open it up, as long as there is no wear on the housing, and replace just the impeller, faceplate and gasket. What is the normal practice for this?

Is the preference also to stick with OEM parts?

Problem is you don't know the condition of the housing until you get it apart.

You're exactly right. The water pump worked great a month ago. Just want to make sure it's great for the whole year. I'll probably buy just the core parts and once I get it apart, inspect and replace as needed if needed. I'm not taking the boat out anytime soon. I think winter is trying to finally set in around here.

I had a shop do mine. Would a shop naturally change the LU oil while doing an impeller/water pump swap?

When you get opened up, if the stainless housing is fine, then go to a Merc dealer and get one. Also you can try Academy Sports. They carry some Merc OEM impellers and kits. Yeah, them little beggers ain't cheap. The one for my 150EFI was $60.00. One for my Merc 60k was $125. Crazy. Those are OEM prices.

Not normally. Most would just drop unit and replace pump. Really good practice to change at the same time though.
