    Default Standing Water/Bilge Pump Questions

Hi guys my dad bought our first non aluminum boat, a 20' Key West cuddy cabin with a 225 hp. My dad bought it this summer while I was out of state. He ran it fine, then left it tied up at his sister's dock for 2 weeks. Got a call from my uncle and said there was some standing water in it. There was a couple of inches of rain so I'm wondering about the bilge pump.

Isn't the bilge pump supposed to run while the boat isn't running assuming the battery isn't dead? How do I check if it's direct wired? He said they put 2 plugs in it, I wasn't there so I have no idea what they plugged. I'm assuming it was drain hole plugs, would you be able to plug the bilge pump outlet?

As of now I plan to check to see if it turns on, cleaning out the filter, and maybe install a bigger one for peace of mind since we plan to take it offshore.

Just waiting on it to cool off to get a few things done with it, 95+ heat index in October is no fun.

Thanks for any help, the whole boat thing is new to us.

There's two different pumps one is manual only and one is auromatic, the automatic one has a float protruding out of it. When water pushes the float up it turns the pump on.

X2! I would check and see if you don’t have a switch labeled bilge. Mine is manual, just flip the switch it pumps. Guessing they plugged both the boat drain and livewell.
Note I said guessing. Good luck and let us know what you figure out.

You will probably find a 2 position switch on the console for the pump. One position for manual operation, and the other for automatic. I don't recall there being an (off) position. If the boats got some age on it, it might be wise to replace all the pumps with new ones. Key West is very good about answering questions about issues you might have with their boats, so don't hesitate calling them with questions. I was having some wiring issues due to the prior owner, and they sent me an entire wiring detail for my model boat. The only issue I have with Key West and many boats in general is they dont give much consideration for getting at the various things to actually work on them.
But that can be fixed also.
