Default AGM Battery With Flooded Cell Battery?

This may have been asked and answered here BUT.... running a 36 volt trolling motor, can I run an AGM battery in series with flooded cell batteries?
I know I should keep all batteries the same size and age but I'm thinking about switching over to all AGM's but don't want to pull the trigger on all three at once.
The local battery shop has AGM's with a three year warranty and no prorate. If the battery goes bad 2 years and 9 months later, they will warranty it out with a brand new battery and warranty. Trouble is, THEY EXPENSIVE!!! It wouldn't hurt as much if I could buy a new one every couple months or so. Any suggestions?

Speck ....from what I've read, it's not recommended to mix them together. Most obvious reason is the difference in charging rates. So, unless you have one of those high $$ chargers that has a setting choice for each bank lead, then I'd advise against it.

As far as suggestions for your situation ... if your current wet cell batteries are working, then maybe buy a AGM every couple of months until you get 3 of them and can switch over to all AGM. But, just be sure your charger has a AGM setting or is specifically for AGM's.

But, personally I wouldn't take my word for it .... I'd PM "CatFan" and ask his opinion.

Thanks CP. That's the problem, one of my trolling batteries died on me. I'm wanting to fish this week. I just bit the bullet and bought another group 31. The tech at the shop told me if my charger is newer than 5-7 years old, it should charge both. I bought a Minn Kota 4 bank 15 amp charger from Bass Pro about 3-4 years ago. He said that should be more than capable of charging either. He said the AGM's charge at 14.2 volts and the flooded cells charge at 13.7 or so. He said my charger should work on either

I was just going by what I read on some of these links : charging an agm battery - Google Search

For instance, under the questions : Can you use a regular battery charger on a gel battery?

Do not use gel or gel/AGM settings, as they will not fully charge an OPTIMA battery and could damage it over time. However, even some AGM-compatible chargers will not recharge deeply discharged (less than 10.5 volts) OPTIMA batteries. ... For regular charging, we recommend a maximum of 10 amps, 13.8 to 15.0 volts.

Can I charge AGM battery with normal charger?

So, a normal battery charger can't be used to charge an absorbent glass matbattery. Most of the AGM battery chargers are equipped with microprocessors that collect information from the power cell to see its current charge status and to adjust the voltage and current accordingly.

Can I charge AGM battery with lead acid charger?

Automotive charging systems for flooded lead acid often have a fixed float voltage setting of 14.40V (2.40V/cell); a direct replacement with a sealed unit could overcharge the battery on a long drive. ... AGM and other sealed batteries do not like heat and should be installed away from the engine compartment.

Thanks CP. I may be better off saving my money and just keep the flooded cell batteries. I would go to golf cart batteries however one battery position in my boat won’t allow for the height of a golf cart battery. The other two would fit ok. I’ll just have to be happy with group 31’s

When replacing batterys in a multiple battery set up it is recommended to replace them all....even if only one is bad. If not your older batterys will pull your new one down to their level. Always replace all of them with same brand and type...and group size. In the end it will save you money. You can use the other old batterys that are still good on a single battery application....truck...tractor ... or something.

I was in the same spot one went down and needed some good new batteries for pulling crank baits. With all that I looked at I could get cart batteries for way less than an AGM and they had more reserve also a couple pounds lighter. I would check into us batteries or Trojan they also have a black one that is supposed to be cheaper. My 2 cents.

I just went to 3 group 31 AGMs. 2 for the trolling motor and 1 for cranking and accessories. I had to pull all 3 batteries out
to check them twice a year. I couldn't get #2 out until #1 was out of the way and so on. I don't know if maintenance free
was the way to go but I'm going to find out. At least I'm not going to have to stand on my head and drag them out and put
    them back twice a year.
    Tell'em I'll be there.
