After writing this post and spending a lot of time studying performance of both motors available today, and my boat, I have decided to get a Yamaha 40 four stroke. Better to have the power when you need it than to need it and not have it.
I have a 16 ft Lund, tiller control, wt 450 lbs, with an Evinrude 30, 1986 model. If I get the Yamaha will performance suffer, or should I be looking for a bigger motor than the 25 Yamaha?

What's the boat rated for hp and transom weight? The 40hp is almost 100lbs heavier.

It is rated for a 40...... in 1985. What has caused me one debate is that right before I moved back to TN, I bought a Lund that was a little bigger, a SSV, 18 ft, and it had a 25 4-stroke Yamaha on it. The boat had a 75" beam, as opposed to my present 16 footer, which has a 65" beam. That SSV was scary with that 25 wide open. The present motor just will not come up out of the hole without moving weight forward. I'm too old to be rearranging everything dependent upon the load. That 25 intrigues me. What has always been a question to me is the rating for motors in the 80's compared to today's motors, given the same boat, which in this case is a 1985 Lund that I love.
I almost ordered a SSV18, and dealer recommended a 60 Bigfoot for it. I could imagine a 25hp would be unnerving on it.
Is yours an older SSV? I have a Fury XL with a 60.
If the extra weight wouldn't make it stern heavy, it would be good. That jump to a 40hp block in any brand is just a lot of weight, since they use the same block up to 60hp.

The reviews that new 25 Yamaha has gotten are really interesting. I wish I could hook one up on my boat and try it, because it has everything I would want, from weight to controls. The two Lund, my old SSV and the old Pro Pike both weigh about the same, beam wider on the SSV. I have always heard that two boats being fairly equal, but one has a wider beam, the wider beam will usually plane off better ( come out of the hole). I am not that interested in speed, but do want better performance than what I now have. I wonder how torque compares on the new 25 compared to my older 30..... If in fact torque is what determines the ability of a motor to get a boat up on plane.
It would be nice to find a dealer who would allow that. I imagine you could prop it down to get on a plane easily.

If it's rated for a 40 , go 40 . The only complaint I have had with a boat are ones that are under powered . Resale is difficult anytime you go lighter even if it works .I believe the older motors would have been rated at the head and the newer at the foot. Even then I still would go with a 40 . jmo.

I have a s16 lund with a 25 yammy 4 stroke on it (not new, an 02). It does about 22-23 mph with a light load and rides bow high. Put 3 people and fishing load in it and it drops down to 18ish. 4 people and you're not getting on plane. I'd like a 40.
Can you summarize what you have seen regarding the reviews of the new Yamaha 25? I'm trying to decide if I want one or to get a heavier Tohatsu 25....or just get an old 25 hp 2 stroke and save my money.
