    Default New thermostat discovery

I just discovered that this 1984 Merc 9.8 is missing the thermostat. Original owner must have pulled it. I can't see why that would hurt as long as water is cooling the motor. It just always pumps water. Right? Wrong?

The thermostat helps warm the engine to the correct operating temp. The motor is designed to operate at a certain temp and if it doesnt reach that temp it will run poor and cause the fuel mix to not burn properly and cause carbon build up.The water will pump and engine will run but performance will suffer over time.Won't cost much to replace and should be an easy fix.

The problem is availability. Hard to find parts for this antique.

FWIW had a 20hp Yanmar diesel with 4000+ hours. It hadn't had a thermostat in from the early 3000 hour mark, possibly before then. Still chugged right along.
