Default Switch box (power pack) pricing

I have a mercury 150 XR6 that has had this go down on it. I took it to a boat mechanic and he recommended replacing both and that they were a little over $200 each. I looked online and found them for under $100 or even both for under $100. So I called him back to ask about it and he advised that he would not recommend those that they were no good. My question is, is this guy giving solid advice or hoo-dooing me? Thanks for any info

Order em online, go get your boat and change them yourself. Take pics of how the wires are and take your time very easy. I had another high priced one go down last fall, ordered the pair for under a 100 and changed em out, so far so good and a good bit of money saved.

Black Max's and XR6's are known for these things going out.
Simple test that will help if you have trouble again.
pull cowling, pull all the plugs and do a compression test, all cylinders should be within 10 percent of each other and anywhere from 115 to 135 depending on the motor and build. I do this first on my old motor each time I have an issue.
If the compression is good put the plugs back in, put it on the muffs and fire it off. Take a plug wire loose in one side and you should notice a miss if you don't take the next one on that side loose, if still no change then you know that switch box is bad. If you notice a miss replace the wire and go to the other side and take one off.
When they first start messing up it can be hard to find this way but listen close and you can tell.
Good luck, hope you get her rolling!!!
