Default 80’s model mercy 9.9 choke problems

I have 9.9 Mercury and the choke knob slips when motor is running! As long as knob is turned st 12 o’clock position it runs good. Then by itself, it slips to the 3 o’clock position and starts to either die or slow the motor down.

It probably has a worn out bushing or something in there letting it turn. Look close inside the cowl where it goes through. Should be able to figure it out. If yo can find serial number and maybe one of us can look it up.

has the fuel line been moved lately?? looks like it could be vibrating and hitting it causing it to turn. just a thought as the pic makes it look like it's awful close to choke.

Or maybe the hose is hitting it when the motor is turned one way or the other.

That's an older 70s model 9.8 mercury pictured. The plastic choke shutter mounted to the carb should have a return spring on it to prevent that problem.
    I'd rather be fishing.
