    Default 1987 150hp evinrude

Im having a couple problems the main on is smoke and exhaust noise come from somewhere above water line when the engine is warm . Its way louder than it should be once its warm and the smoke will choke you when the winds behind you. The second problem is the tilt motor wouldnt lower the engine it runs but the engine doesnt lower if you keep messing with it it will eventually come down ,but once you bring it all the way up you have to start all over again trying to get it down

I have a 90 Johnson 150. Occasionally my trim tilt will go up but not down. Check your relays on the motor. I just tap mine and good to go

If when you have trouble going one way or other you can switch the relays around. If that works you got one relay going bad. Best to buy both relays if need to replace one.

#1 On your exhaust leak, sounds like you have a blown gasket on the exhaust housing where power head mounts to the midsection.. Pull the cover off and run it till it starts smoking and you should be able to see where it's coming from. On your trim, you say it's running but not lowering means relays are working. If it is in fact running in the down position you could have a relief valve sticking open or low on fluid. Get it up and when it won't come down, get some help to run the switch and take something like a wooden dowel or hammer handle, place on housing below motor and tap on that while running motor and see if that works. Also need to locate fill plug and check fluid level.

Your tilt problem sounds like you are way low on fluid. I agree with Cray on the blown gasket for the smoke problem. It could also be the rubber gasket that seals the mid section to the lower unit.
