    Default New Boat owner question

I was trying on my new boat today. We were going along at a good clip then all the sudden it just acted like you just dropped it into a lower gear. No bang or any noises. It ran fine. We were able to move, just real slow. I got home and pulled off the prop. It looked like the pin had rubbed the side of the inside of the prop about an inch. I can take a pair of needle nose pliers and turn the inside of the prop. Is this normal? I can put a pair channel lock on the shaft and turn over the motor. It is a 25 hp Enenrude 1971. Sorry about being so long winded but I'm trying to give the the most info to get a good answer. Thanks John

Sounds like you spun your prop. There is a rubber bushing between the inside hub and the outer hub that is glued or otherwise bonded to both for shock dampening. Sounds like glue failed allowing hub to spin on the rubber. Can be repaired by a prop shop.

I second what beshears said. It happens and is a good excuse to keep a spare prop, wrench and propnut in the boat. Last one I had rehubbed cost almost as much a new aftermarket prop. Fix it and get a backup

I had and older motor that had a shear pin made out of brass when you hit something you had to replace the pin. It was too old to have the rubber hub.

Go to this site and look up your motor the schematics will show your motor and prop in detail the ones that I looked at evinrude 25hp year 71 did have the rubber drum in the prop plus a shear pin also they are shops that repair these or you may just want to buy another but you need to make sure that you have the right model numbers before you can really know which one is your motor here is the web site:

You spun the hub in your prop.
