Oh if you can buy straight from the farm "you can buy the farm"...I would figure the middle man who delivers them to the biatshops has to mark them up 100% as well. So I bet he gets them for 2 cents and sells them to the bait shops, by the pound per 1,000. For example, a #6 at retail is approx 13 cents of which the baitshop paid approx 5 cents of which the bait deliver truck probably paid 3-2 cents. Now the fellers selling them so cheap MIGHT be catching them themselves in a seine net or something like that then the cost is ZERO and you can sell them SUPER CHEAP!

I think part of the problem on the high prices in Batesville and Drasco are lack of competition.

    Smile Minnows

Here at Millwood I can buy a 1/4 lb. for about $3.75---myself I use a larger minnow about 1-2 inches in size, a little smaller than a bass minnow. You can also buy a smaller size about 1 1/4 in length and get 3-4 dozen in a 1/4 lb.
Like the man said---What size do you want--its cheaper to buy by weight. The guys I buy from do not even count the millows, they just dip up some and ask me is that enough, if I say know, than he adds some more and charge me by the weight. Of course I know these guys and buy from them all of the time. I find that bigger minnows keep the smaller crappie off your line.

I've always liked a little bigger minnow, too.

I'm buying approx. 20 doz. small minnows for $12. Stores at home are selling for $1.70 a doz. = $34 for the 20 doz. I'm buying my personal minnows so I dont move 'em like bait shops either. Theyre buying 'em cheaper than I can. Their mark up is close to 200% (less what dies).

We buy all ours by the pound from Anderson's Minnow Farm in Lonoke, Ar. They have a 6# minimum order. Seems like they are about 30 bucks for 6 lbs. I never knew how the grading system worked until I read Sac-a-Lait's post. I have been getting #8's last year and they seems to produce a little bigger crappie.
I think that if your lake gives up a fair shair of 1 1/2 to 3 lbers that using the larger #8 minnow will produce bigger stringers.

Yeah, I really believe that big crappie prefer a bigger minnow, not bass sized but bigger than the piddly ones.

Don't think they're that high, but it may depend on who you know.

My dad always used bigger minnows at Nimrod. I use big jigs all the time. Crappie here feed on Shad most of the time, seen 4+ inch Shad in Crappie often.
