    Default GPS question??????

Does anyone own or use a Garmin 276C? I presently have a Garmin GPS76. It can only hold 500 waypoints. My problem is I have well over a 1000 waypoints. If I fish a certain area, I have to upload for that area. If I get out of this area, I have to run home and upload a different area. Have looked at all handheld units, but none exceed 1000 waypoints. I dont care anything about the mapping, but it looks like I am gonna be stuck with it. If you use the 276C, yank my chain about it. It (276C) can handle up to 3000 waypoints. Pat Hahs (Kentucky Hydrographics) is side scanning my area now. I know I will need more waypoint capability. Pat knows I am waiting on his stuff...lol... There is no hit and miss with his side scan. It is dead on. I am waiting for the maps Pat.........

Just by another GPS76 and that will double the amount of way points you have now.

Tom you have so many waypoints or brush piles you will not be able to fish them all.

Why not cull out the non productive ones from the list and concentrate on the ones that produce most fish.

Or spend some money and get the higher prices units that has more waypoints. With those units and a lap top you should be able to make your own topo maps and do your own sidescanning.

I wonder if the new humminbird sidescanning sonar units have GPS added on and if they have a lot of waypoints.

PS Man that thing cost 999 bucks but it's has the capabilty to download weather data and to view the noa weather radar screens via a satellite link up. Now that would be cool. You can see the storm coming on the radar screen on your depth sounder/GPS screen. How neat is that?

I got an email from Pat last month and he was telling me that the new humminbird sidescanning units show more detail than his two year old commercial side scanning device that he is using. I was surprised but pleased that he said that. Of course I don't know how he makes his topo maps.. yet. I still suspect that he is using AutoCad or a similar engineering program.

Also you might go to the www.garmin.com web site and check out the manual for that unit and see just how many waypoints it can save.

But my best advise to you would be to cull your fishing spots and save the best 1000 and save yourself some money. If you catch too many more fish they will start putting a 14" size limit on KY lake. LOL

    Just my 2 cents.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do mate.

Maybe laminate a list of the best ones on paper and take it with you always. You could get some nice laminated papers at office depot or similar store. I know its not much help but its very cheap lol

From the garmin site - Stores up to 3,000 user waypoints, 50 reversible routes (300 waypoints per route)
    That's 15000 waypoints.
I guess what that means is that you could have each waypoint in 5 different routes but that you couldn't have 300 different waypoints in 50 different routes.
Anyway sounds as if 3000 for sure.

My Question... Is that actual waypoints or points along a trail. There is a difference. On my Lowrance LMS 480, I do need to erase the trail to eliminate the trail points. The unit records a "point" each time u turn. I record "waypoints" seperatley myself.

Magellan makes GPS units that take memory cards. you could store a bunch on those!

    Default 276c

It (276C) has memory card capability. I was hoping someone owned on and I could get the "lowdown". Me, I never cull waypoints. The only way I would cull a waypoint would be to sit on it 24/7/365. If no fish appeared during this stay, the I would delete it. You never know where the fishes might be. So, why decrease your chances by eliminating a posibility. My thoughts on this. The more waypoints, the more chances you have at "sacking" one of them.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I got all charged up about a new GPS several months ago. I was thinking of a 76C hand held however. Those puppies are about $500.00. That takes a fair bite out of social security check so I got to thinking maybe I could get a combination sonar and gps to upgrade my sonar as well. Then I see Eagle has a 500C combination for $550.00 and Lowrance a 332C for $649.00 , Hummingbird a Matrix 97 for $850.00 and on and on and on, plust that check is fast running out. I gave up in confusion. I am going to ( when I get a round toit ) make a list of features I want and then buy the unit that best meet's those criteria. Main thing I can't decide is seperate or combo unit. Seems like you have made that decision. Can you share why you decided on a seperate GPS rather than a combo unit? Maybe I should start a thread on that discussion or look at a green carp site.

Me, I have 3 boats, therefore I needed something potable in a GPS uint
that can maintain lots of waypoints. The sonar on each of my boats work well and are good reliable units (Lorance X22, Humminbird Wide Portriat and Eagle Ultra Classic). I spent a lot of time on the phone with Garmin tech support before I decided on this particular unit. I went through a lot of senerios with the tech, and he made suggestions. He was very helpful and polite. I ordered the 276C today. If I don't like it, I can return it in 30 days and get a 100% refund. I bought it through an authorized Garmin dealer. Sure glad I am still working. lol.. Good idea about the thread. You start the thread, the I will post some of my complaints about all the high end GPS units. It is a money making racket for ALL GPS manufacturers. My opinion, naturally.

I have the GPSmap 76C and it shows to store 1000 waypoints. And 10,000 point track logs.
The only thing with the map, Is your on water and it will show you running out on land.
It takes me back within 6 ft of most places. I use it a lot in winter to track the same run ever time.
