Most likely nearby in deeper water? What's water temp?
Went for a little while this afternoon. Caught about a dozen, 2 ft deep in 8 ft of water. All were males. So were are all the big females?

im no expert but everthing i have read indicates they would be a little deeper out maybe on the first significant break in the bottom. Some will more than likly be on the creek channel deep or at the mouth of secondary creeks. Your water temp would have a lot to do with it also.
Im in middle southern TN and im still catching big females on the creek ledges in 20 ft + water on structure but with flats or sloaping points close by. Water temp is in the low to mid 50's

Today water temps were about 43 degrees, last week 47. I heard one day as high as 49.

Reelfoot. Not that I'm an expert on Reelfoot, just familiar with the lake, I would guess that you were fishing in the Lower Blue Basin since there was 8' of water, the deeper parts for that lake. The males are looking for warmer water and/or just feeding more aggressively today than the females. It's a competition for proper spawning habitat but at those water temps I'd go with schooling males competing for food.

Well I think that the males are coming in to spawn in to the warmer water areas. Also that is why the males are so dark in thier color during the spawn. A dark color will warm faster than a light color. These males are looking to obtain the best spawnding are that there is. It you remmeber where you caught those males before and if you can go back to the same lacations several times this Spring you will catch more males from the same spots.
I was out today till 1:30, caught 5 keeper crappie, one white bass and one rock fish on Percy priest. All were caught on minnows today, in the channel 20-25 ft down in 30-35 ft water. Had a friend with that had to go to work so had to come in early. Fish were still biting which sucks, but didn't want to drive back again. Water temp on surface was 46. Next time They will have to drive their own car to the ramp. Oh well, OOps, All were females.
