Default give em away or keep em?

Why is it so hard for some fisherman to release their catch? More often than not I see other fisherman offer up one or a 1/2 dozen crappies then leave. I understand one or two fish isn't enough for supper so why can't those fish be returned to spawn and fight again. I haul fish back in a drywall bucket with water 30 miles, still could be released. There almost seems to be an unwritten rule to offer your fish to someone if your short for the day

Personally, I release the vast majority, but I know as far as crappie anglers are concerned, I'm in a very small minority. I know many anglers who I have great respect for who seem nearly incapable of releasing fish like its irresponsible to release a caught fish.

If I'm fishing with someone who prefers to keep fish I try to make sure they leave with their limit. I give away far more fish than I keep, but that number of fish is a tiny portion of the fish I release.
Good things come to those who bait.

I just want enough in my freezer to have them when I want them and if I get too many in that freezer I start giving them to people around here that don't or can't fish, but still like eating them.

I don't need a limit every time out either and most of my fishing trips are more of a short trip of one hour to a few hours as my physical health will not let me fish all day any longer.

If I have enough Crappie for a meal , I keep them . If I only catch a few keepers , I offer them to other fishermen . If they don't want them , I release them back into the lake .

I do not keep what I catch ever for myself, and have only very occasionally allowed someone to keep my catch, counting it against their limit.

I have released some up to 1 1/2 lbs because at the end of the morning I didn't have but a couple. My rule is 6 fair sized ones are enough for the wife and I a good meal. I've had people give me their few fish caught but they were in no shape to be released and make it.

As usual this topic brings out posts that want to make "rules" for the "true sportsman". What you keep is of no consequence to me, as long as you're within the game laws of your state. Some people don't go fishing very often. Would you begrudge them taking home 30 crappie, when it might be all they take home that year? Some people have large, or extended families. (me) A good nutritious meal of fresh fish is hard to beat.
I've never kept a limit of any fish in years. Our state does have liberal limits.
Most of the waters I fish don't get intense fishing pressure and are very productive.
These are some of the variables that the fisheries departments take into consideration when setting limits. The biggest, and some say best, crappie lake in our state, Buggs Island, has NO limit.
Our state has a 25 crappie limit. I've never kept 25, but have kept 20, usually when I take somebody with me. We could have kept 50. When we get into a yellow perch run we'll keep plenty. We fish a lot for shellcrackers and yellow perch too. Delicious meat on all these fish. There's a 50 fish limit on sunfish and no limit at all on yellow perch. All these fish, including crappie, lay an abundance of eggs each year.
Ok, I'm going on here....... My point is, I'm sure nobody who's involved with this forum is interested in seeing their favorite quarry decimated to the point of a bad fishery. I first signed up for Crappie.com, after getting my scant online information from "other" (green carp) websites. Catch and release was the mantra on those sites. I found this site and said, "Hey, these people actually eat fish! I think I like it!"
I say, as long as the fish aren't wasted, no laws are broken, and it doesn't hurt the overall fishery, what's the problem?
Do gooder since April 26, 2009!
