Default 2 questions: Long crappie rods and Blakemore Roadrunners

    #1:
At BPS today I looked at some super long 12'+ crappie rods. What's the purpose and advantage of a rod that long? How do you fish it? It is solely for jigging?

    #2:
Last year I bought a couple of bags of Blakemore Roadrunner heads with the spinners. I've been using them with 3" grubs in various colors and have been doing quite well catching bass and pickeral with them. I understand this is a respectable crappie lure as well. Does anyone here use them for crappie, and if so, how?

    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Rowland

I pitch with a 12' rod and I run the roadrunners , I switched out the body though . I use the chartruse head with a black body/chartruse curly tail .

I caught over 300 fish last night in about 5 hours ( mostly dinks , 1 bass <--Trash fish , around 45 or 50 gills , and the rest crappie ) a few were around 10" if I want to work 'em fast I put 'em on a Shakespeare Microspin ( 4' rod ) last night I was pitching into the shaded areas under the trees and rose bushes so it was a 12' rod with a small foam float ( about 1") then I just worked it out real slow .... the curly tail slowed the fall down . With the float if I got a tap , I could allow the bait to sit really close to the spot and with a twitch or 2 with the ol' finger put enough flash on the spinner and twist in the tail to drag the rascal out for a second go around .

The water surface temp was 89* in open water and 86* in the shade , cloudy ( rained in the last 24 hours ) the deepest spot in the lake is 8' deep so I'd say the water is going to be really warm already . The high for the day was 92*, sunny and no breeze to speak of .

By the time I left everyone on the lake was pissed of at me ( something about all I was catching and they weren't) , but I made peace ... I handed out about 2 dozen of the baits I was using to the kids and even a couple of the adults . Now I'm not sure if they were returning the favor by helping me load my boat or just trying to get rid of me faster ? :D

    Default Roadrunners / PonyHead

I use and like roadrunners. I use several type of bodies on them from a tube type also the curly tail type and have started using the hot bait for crappie here in Southern Missouri "Bobby Garland's Swimming Minnow" bodies. I even make the jig weedless when I need to, by adding a "stick gaurds" to the jig before the body. I use enough of these jigs I have started making my own Pony head jigs. I use 1/32, 1/16 and 1/8 oz.

    Exclamation Rowland ...

I've been using Roadrunners since they came on the market. And I've been catching fish on them, since I started using them. Great Crappie baits, IMHO.
I'm kinda partial to the 1/32 & 1/16oz size. For the most part, I use the marabou version ... and solid Chartreuse seems to be the one most favored by the fish.
Being more likely to "cast" my Crappie baits - than, say, troll or vertical jig them ... I use the RR's as a "search bait". When a med to fast retrieve is necessary, I don't think many other baits can outfish them. When the conditions necessitate a slow to "dead slow" retrieve ... I'm more likely to put a tube jig on a weedless jighead, and probe the cover with that.
I like both "versions" - the willow leaf blade & colorado blade. I am also "experimenting" with using various other sized blades, and other "colored" blades ... plus, using various other brands/styles of plastic bodies.
Roadrunners account for a large portion of the Crappie I've caught, that weighed over 1lb ... and a fairly substantial portion of those over 2lbs. Most were caught casting the RR's ... but, I have successfully used them while flatline trolling (shallow mud flats, prespawn period).

Since my casting rods are no longer than 7' ... and my "minnow" rods are no longer than 8' -- I can't comment on the "long poles". ......... luck2ya ...cp

ps - be careful where you use Roadrunners ... I have a 12lb Tiger Muskie on my wall, that fell for a Roadrunner on 4/20/85 - Green River Lake, Ky.

SkyChimp, Are you planning to fish with us on the 18th?
If so, there will be a few of us there that use long poles and we can fill you in on the ways that work for us.
My long poles go in the garage in April and I don't use them again until Dec.
Let me know if you need details for the 18th

I use 14' and 10' long rods as well as 6' rods for long lining (trolling with baits trailing behind the boat). The long rods get the jigs away from the boat and provide separation so the jigs don't tangle with each other. I can cover a lot of water in a hurry while I'm searching for the crappie's location at that particular time. Six rods are about all I can handle when I'm by myself.

No, my son's scout pack has a preplanned camping trip at Cheatem Annex that weekend, and I'm a leader and have to attend. On top of that, I don't have my boat yet - hopefully in the next week or two. Hopefully there will be more get togethers in the future? Little Creek looks like a wonderful spot, and I've driven over the dam many times hoping to fish there.
    Regards,
