    Default newb question

I have always fished for bass, mainly stream small mouth with crank baits and soft plastics. This year i got a small fishing boat and im planning on doing some crappie fishing. Im going tonight and using a bobber and minnows. Two questions: what size hook should i use and should i just hook the minnow through the back?

I'd suggest using a #1 or #2 lite wire Aberdeen ... even a #4 would be fine. Yes, you can hook the minnow thru the back, just under the dorsal fin. That'll work just fine. You can also hook the minnow thru the eye socket, behind the eyeballs .... in the tail ... or under the chin & up between the nostrils. All are perfectly good ways to hook a minnow, if you're going to be stationary. If you're going to be moving around any (drifting, slow trolling) then you'll want to hook them thru the eye socket or under the chin.

Learn to use jigs -- very fun, effective way to catch crappie. There's tons of info in the archives about jig fishing. Read!

I believe the fellers have covered the bases... minnows and jigs and you'll be set!

use a #4 or #6 gold hook, hook the minners through the lips going up. Trust me on that.
