    Talking Mixed Catch

I wonder what you fellows do when you get a channel (or other large fish) that hits your spider rigs while fishing for crappie? To be honest, I have caught just about as many channels on my crappie rigs this spring as I have crappie. I caught the 11 # channel in the picture on a Zebco 33, cheap 5' pole, 6# test, and #2 aberdeen hook. I was fishing brush, I was lucky he didn't tangle me. I have hooked several cats with my 12' poles but none the size of the 11 pounder. I think a fish like him would bust the highest priced crappie pole in short order if the line doesn't break first. How do you guys handle a big fish that hits your crappie rig? You have to have other
fish hitting your crappie rigs, I do all of the time, I am sure anyone fishing with minnows or jigs would. I do fish for cats, but I have caught alot of cats and bass while crappie fishing with crappie rigs where crappie should be.

I break the line off as I only use 6lb test fishing line on my crappie rigs. Once last year I caught a 2 lb Yellow Bullhead Catfish but I got lucky as I had for the first time used my bass Worm rod with heavier line and a KY Lake crappie rig. I lowered the minnows down to the bottom and turned the Bait Casting reel two turns up and set the pole down. It was not very long (seconds) before the pole tip bent over.

I do know that these catfish will eat minnows and can zero in on them at a very early age. I am talking at less than a year old these yellow bullheads wills start feeding on small 1" long minnows. I am sure that they can eat the smaller minnows as well at an even younger age. In fact I caught this catfish as a baby when it was only about 1" long itself just last summer at birddog pit right at the gravel launch ramp. He was hiding in some algae or moss that grows abuntently in that shallow water around the launch ramp.
