Default I guess I'm "Old School"

because I really don't see a need for Power Pro or any of the new braids. I am a 100% crappie fisherman and I'm tickled with a 2 lb. fish. Anything else is thrown back if I can land it on 4lb. test line.

If I hang up on a brush pile I intentionally break my line to keep from pulling the brush in my boat. If you pull that hard the fish leave. I also carry a tow rope in case I break down or someone else does. I can see a need for breid if you don't carry a rope.

I have read several post about line twist, kinks , etc. but I really don't have that problem with mono. Maybe once or twice a year. I have no need to cast a 1/32 oz. jig 50 yards and at my age I would surely forget the broom handle, mop handle or other devices to keep from cutting my hands. Brooms & mops always have annoyed me.

Just remember---the older you get, the earlier you have to start.....LOL

Good wisdom there don! I fish lighter line also just to avoid tearing up the brush. Good luck and good fishing. Wait a minute, think I have another bite!

absolutely. I don't want to spend the time putting out piles just to mess them up with the heavier lines. I use 6 pound and sometimes 8 pound all the time. I drift and troll with light lines for the same reasons. I do have some long poles rigged with 14 pound for trolling in real heavy wind. THen, I use a swivle and use 6 pound leader. I do this so I can use real heavy weights. DOn't like putting heavy lead on light lines.

    Default Old School

You ain't old school, u jest old. I am with u. I have several spools of ironsilk hanging in the garage (8lb). I can't tie a good knot with it. Kids can have it. I like my old stren mono. I use 4 lb titlining, 8 lb trollin and 14 lb draggin. I rather loose jigs than tear up the cover. Too hard to put out them piles out as u know. If I can't get jig loose in couple of jiggles, I cut it n go. Works for me.

I hear ya DonG. I'm a young guy and I understand what you are saying and its how I've always done it. I grew up fishing ultralight equipment and now rarely if ever get birds nests or other line problems. My main interest is the extra feel or easier detection of a bite. But even then I usually don't miss many hits with mono if I'm paying attention. My worst enemy when it comes to fishing is my imagination. I'm always thinking of new ways to do things. Yet that can also put more fish in the boat too. I really don't think that I will ever go to power pro for casting. I'm just leaning to it for vertical fishing for crappie. For those redbreast and other panfish in the streams and rivers that I fish I will most likely always stick to mono. Unless they come out with clear power pro.......but lets not open that can of worms.... :D

I'm gonna try the power pro this spring. I found some 10/2 on the bargain rack at walmart. 150 yds for $8. I have a 6ft leader of 4# mono connected to it with a uni-knot. Hope it works for me. If not, at least i didn't break the bank buying it at full price.

Don - I am younger....approx 28 years.....and I am with you too...I don't think I am old enough to consider my opinion "old school", but I don't want to mess with having to cut my line with a knife or anything of that sort....if I can't break the line when I need to with my hand, than you probably won't catch it on my reels....I have sliced my hand wide-open using some 4lb test.....and if you get it just right in the groove of your finger, it takes a little while to get over it......not to mention the next time you go to break off....that line seems to naturally run right back into that cut you created earlier.....

I have landed an 7lb 15oz striper on my 4lb test on a 14ft rod....that is my largest to date on such small line....and I didn't have much trouble doing it....you just need to play it right......I posted that picture a while back on the GA board with a 2lb 7oz crappie I caught on the same test line in the same day.
I won't be at work........I'm feelin' crappie today!
