Default Am I an IDIOT? Tenkara question

I am not trying to be a jerk, I guess I am old and just don’t understand. Looking at Tenkara rods, but what is the difference between those and telescopic long crappie rod?

    Thanks

The intent of the rod-maker. Telescopic crappie rods are designed to drop bait straight down (mostly) at the end of the rod. Tenkara rods are designed to flick flies and lures out beyond the length of the rod over and over again. Tenkara rods are much lighter in material weight than a crappie rod. I used both and each are effective at catching fish. There are other details that could be mentioned, but this is the quick version of the difference.

I have a tenkara rod, thought it would be great for reaching back in docks. As Watertooner says it is much lighter, ...that is the good part.... the problem is it is much weaker. You cannot lift a fish at all....ask me how I know... after my second warranty claim it was explained to me, after I explained how it broke, that I am to bring the telescopic in to retrieve the fish, in other word drag it out. Most of my dock fishing is at Lake of the Ozarks, most have lifts, just not possible to drag a fish through all that. Mine has been on the shelf for over two years now.

I've been wanting to get a tenkara rod myself. I though about using it on pole style submerged trees where you'd have no problem retracting it.

I only have one tenkara rod, and it is pretty light. I would not want to try to lift a keeper crappie into a boat with it. I like to fish from my kayak along weed banks. It works perfect for that kind of fishing. Just stay the right distance from the weed line, and drop flies next to cover. Haul in the bluegill and bass.

One pc rods are more sensitive than telescoping and 2 pc rods. Same brand, same length same weight and same action rods and the one pc rod is going to be more sensitive.

General rule is fishing that needs to be more sensitive--tight lining for example--1 pc should be better . Under float or cast and reel in , where sensitivity is not as important--telescoping and 2pc or multi pcs works fine.

    Your mileage may vary.

I have a keiyru rod (longer and heftier than a tenkara rod) which is designed to fish deeper and wider. The direct connection of line to rod via a lillian (short, flexible connector) makes me often tell my fishing pals that I can feel the fish fart before it grabs the bait. Even though it is a telescopic rod, at 18'6" the last rod segment is so thin that I can snap it like a toothpick between my fingers if I not super careful (been there, done that). It's an enjoyable way to fish while drifting a bait from a boat.
