I know that there are several methods used for keeping our fish fresh while in the boat. Just wondering if anyone has tried using the reusable freezer blocks instead of ice.

I don't use the commercially made ones. I keep half gallon milk jugs full of water in the freezer. Use them for a trip and put them back to freeze again for the next trip.

Yes, I have used a reusable freezer block a time or two .... specifically a Koolit (style 404) 7.5x9x1.75" block (probably got it at work, where it was used to ship meds to the hospital I worked at). It did "okay", but really no better than a 1gal plastic milk jug of ice. (which cost me nothing in either case ... and I certainly wouldn't have bought a similar sized YETI or RTIC gel pack for livewell duty ... too "frugal" for that )

No; I used a series of 3 1/2 gallon OJ jugs filled with frozen water in my live well this summer--1 at the beginning of fishing, swap to the next one half-way through the trip (usually 2-3 hours in), and 1 after I refill with fresh water and before putting the boat onto the trailer to go home. If a catfish punctures one, not a big deal; I drink enough OJ daily to get another bottle quickly before they go to recycling. I also use G-Juice in the live well.

When going for panfish, I use a smaller cooler and sometimes use the reusable freezer blocks wrapped in a plastic grocery bag. Sometimes, I use a qt size block, frozen in a Glad Ware type container, also wrapped in a plastic bag. But, the absolute best container I've used is (when using a larger cooler) a gallon Yamalube(with water) jug. They are much thicker than milk or iced tea jugs and haven't cracked in over 6 years of use. They last all day....no problem. Wash, rinse, back in the freezer.

2 frozen 2 liter coke bottles fit in the bottom of my little ice chest. I like the one at WalMart with a single handle. That way I can carry ice chest and fillet knife into fish cleaning station in one trip.

I keep mine in livewell if they are living well. If I have to transport them in hot weather I like gallon jugs frozen as well as a bag of crushed ice in my cooler. If your going to hold them for awhile good idea to keep water drained off and layer of crushed ice over the fish.

I use frozen two liter bottles in my livewell during the spring. Bagged ice in the summer and my livewell during the fall and winter.

1/2 gallon milk jugs frozen for me. Built in handle works awesome. Use, rinse, and re-freeze.
