Had 1 gigantic minnow in my bucket one time while fishing brushpiles. Got tired of grabbing him every time I reached in for a minnow. I put him on my hook finally and said “If I catch one it’ll probably be big!”
    Well, it was………6 lb bass!!!!

Bass & Catfish is certainly a by-catch, welcome by many. I was really surprised by how good the Bass fillets were. Better than I remember.

Used to stop at a small bait shop next to a river that had some big crappie. He had to bait tanks, one with crappie minnows and one with catfish minnows. I always got the catfish minnows. When the jig bite died I would switch over to the big minnows and catch several more crappie and they were always the bigger ones. Even a 12" crappie has no problem eating a 4" shiner. Haven't fished that spot in years but need to try that again since it has been a crappy crappie year for me so far.

So Many folks throw them back, no matter the size. Well, Some on here know how them South Louisianna women are who have been alive for a minute...If it's legal size, AHEMMMM..., Better get it on home for supper, no matter what it is. Bass taste good, for sure.

I stock my minnow vat with #20 shiners in the fall through spring. That's a count of 250 per 5 pounds, 3.5 inches long. We consider that a large minnow on Sardis or Enid. At Grenada baitshops it's considered a medium, a large there is brooder 4 inch plus.

No that's BIG Shiners. Can't say I wouldn't take the bait home to try making some fried Sardines. 250/5#'s is serious shiners, I don't know how large a shiner our local hatchery has.

They are sizeable, mainly use mine as tipping minnows. Very rarely push straight minnows unless dead of winter or early spring. I do like putting on a big minnow under a cork during the spring. Let them dance in and out of cover until get bit.
Be surprised what a 9" or 10" crappie will try to swallow. We have to be 12" plus here on length.
Too much trouble trying to keep them critters in the hot month's, plus they will eat plastic pretty easy then.
As far as bass goes, I will eat them all day long when just a pound or two. Don't catch many unless in a farm pond here unfortunately. Fair game in my mind if legal!

That cork stuff is not just for spring! Works 366 days a year here, you just change the depth. Sometimes it's slower, sometimes not, but this year is a year here that they want live bait. Not saying you can't catch a fish on jigs but Hammers want a big ole minnow.

Hammer time, very nice. Yeah maybe I need to get me some minners, pretty slow here. One day I catch a few, another day I get good pictures!
