I'm a member of a jon boat forum on Facebook. New guys always come on saying they need more speed. Many guys recommend they put 40hp on a 12-14ft flat bottom. I tell they this is rediculous advice because those boats are rated for 9.9 -20hp outboads max. I then get a flooded with responses that don't be wimp, go as big as possible, don't let the government tell you what to do, etc. I tell them a flat bottom is not built for speed and although you can go slightly over the outboard recommendation on the plate, going double over it is dangerous. It's always the young guys who want to go faster. If you want a fast boat a small flat bottom is the last platform you want to go with. Safety means nothing to them because accidents only happens to others.
