Slab, Donkey, whatever you want to call it depends on the situation. In general, the biggest fish of the day is the Slab of the day.
When the grandkids are with me, they each caught a slab that day and it was their personal best. Once they get double digits in age, personal best gets a little harder to achieve, but they still caught a slab that day.
When fishing in a tournament, the slab of the day is the biggest fish caught. Granted, my slab my be the smallest out of 14 teams, but its still my slab.
I like to compliment everyone on their slab for the day. No doubt they have a story and a memory to go along with it. It was a highlight for them and important for them. I like to celebrate in their success.
Don’t know how to add pictures, but I don’t consider it a slab till it’s 16 inches or above. I have photos of me holding 16 inch crappie and a 17.3 inch crappie. Those are slabs. Average keeper fish for me is from 12 inches to 15 inch’s. Everything below 12 inches that is considered shorts where I am fishing. However I do understand there areas in the country where a 12 inch crappie maybe considered a slab there. So slab by crappie definition to me would be determined by where you are located.

I don't measure the big fish, just weigh them . Slabs start around 1.75 lbs.
your mileage may vary

These I would consider slabs IMO in the waters I fish but I’m still hunting a trophy. 3+ would be a trophy to me.
