I fish 8# mono a lot now especially if I'm fishing brush or structure. I won some BnM rods that came with 8# already spooled and loved fishing structure with it so switched. I don't fish as heavy a line if casting or open water.

Today I tried to fish with braid in 10-15 mph winds and that’s almost impossible, the wind caught the line out of the water and would not let the jig sink enough for the strike, so I am eating a little crow here, but I am gonna change some of my rods back from braid back to mono. But with that said braid is much better when there is no breeze blowing and you want your jig to go as slow as possible, braid is the ticket to me.![]()
I run 4lb braid to about a 8-10 foot 4lb fluoro leader. Just like a longer leader as it seems to not hit the guides as much.

Stepping or falling on rods is what breaks them - not braid. My drag is just right along with rod flex to fight larger fish. Thanks for the suggestion. If the rod repairs were due to the braid .... back off an extra 1/3 on the drag or learn to sweep the rod (rather than jerking it).
I really like braid for the sensitivity. BUT...I feel like i spend WAY more time untangling wind knots. I've gone back to mono for vertical jigging.
Life is a matter of luck, and the odds in favor of success are in no way enhanced by extreme caution. - KptLt Erich Topp, German U-boat Commander, 1943
I allow 2' of line below the top guide to the lure. Side arm casts also help.
Of course the best way is to use heavier jigs or lures 1/8oz of heavier and/or cast with the wind.

A few more reasons I dislike plastic line:
1. more line twist than braid when using spinners
2. the line bows toward the water when using light lures on a slow retrieve = slack and less light strike sensitivity
3. line memory creates line coils which limit casting distance of light lures
4. get stuck in spincast reels every 4th cast
5. larger knots than braid when tied on to light jigs/lures which reduces lure action. This is due to a larger line-test diameter.
