Default Opinions wanted on new trolling motor

Hello fellow crappie catchers........I have a 2005 XPress H51 and my original Motorguide trolling motor quit on me this past weekend. Time for an upgrade. My friend put me onto a Boat Dealership near me that does factory take-offs and puts on new higher power trolling motors.

The guy says he's got several brand new Minn Kota Edge 45 thrusts that he can take off and install on my boat for just under $500.

Good deal or no? Opinions wanted. Thanks.

Lots of factors. Do you want spot lock? What features are you wanting? How do you fish? What kind if any electronics are you running? How big is your boat length weight etc.

I replaced my MK Ulterra with an ULTREX and love it. I had a EDGE and didn’t like it at all. Remote controlled TMs allowing you to drive the boat while away from the foot pedal are awesome. Many options out there it’s mind boggling.

Was your Motor Guide a foot control or remote controlled?
If you like both features then that may be the best option.

My Motorguide that went out was just a basic foot control trollingmotor. I don't need the spot lock or anything really fancy or really strong. I crappie or bluegill fish on fairly small lakes 99% of the time. I'm not gonna be livescoping and chasing down fish all day OR trying to fish in fast moving water such as on rivers. My cousin advised that I should get at least a 70 lb thrust, but that would require 2 batteries and I don't really wanna do that. The one I have is probably a 45 lb. It has Lil Hustler on it, or I think that's what it says on what's left of the sticker. I've had it worked on and new parts put on it before at a Trolling Motor Shop in Texarkana, but they tell me that they don't do anything Motorguide anymore.

Naw, I wanted opinions on the MinnKota Edge 45 lb thrust and if you all thought $500 was a fair price. $389 plus another $100 for installation. Just curious if any Edge 45 users had had any issues or if they were satisfied with the unit.

I see they retail for 470.00 at Cabelas so you'd be saving 80.00. I would say as long as it comes with the full warranty it would be a good price. As far as the motor itself, I can't help you.

I had an Edge 55 on my old 18' Alumicraft, and if it was windy, it was not enough. I did a lot of trolling then, and it would struggle when windy! Price seems fair - think mine was around that same cost 10 years ago. And $100 to install seems a bit high unless you have to get in and around things where this old fat guy don't do real well any more!

I have the same motor on a 16'Lowe aluminum bass boat. It pulls it just fine, the newer style foot controls are much easier to use and seem to be durable. The only thing I would change would probably be the pull cord to a cable type. They dont seem to last long.

I did hear that the pull cord frayed very quickly and I should keep a spare in the boat just in case.
