    Default Advice on new rod

I am looking for a good quality 7-8 foot rod. Im looking for as lightweight as possible without sacrificing the backbone. Been looking at St Croix Avid series. I know they are high dollar but have an awesome warranty. Anyone have advice for others to have a look at? I cast a lot of times while livescoping when fish are spooky. This length rod gives me a lot of options on how to use it.

This month's issue of In-Fisherman magazine has a very informative article on crappie rods. Read that for a good starting point. I'm a fan of longer rods and two that I recommend are the CALZANTE EX 7'3" which is rated for 2-6 lb line. Rod has a light tip with lot's of backbone. #2 7'6" Shimano Soare that has a lighter tip than the Calzante but good backbone and will cast jigs a long way. These are both JDM rods under $200. There are tons of great rods out there and hunting for the right one is part of the fun.

I think I have found a great one in the Okuma guide select pro ultra light. It is very sensitive, light, and is only high end in function, 120-150. I have a couple of their SST Kokane rods that are half the price, but the new one is worth double the price for the gains in sensitivity and feel.

I have the St Croix avid panfish in 6-9 UL, 7 L and 7 ML. Love them all. Like the UL the best. Casting light jigs 1/32oz. Use the 7-foot L the most vertical jigging. Cast cranks with the ML.
