I use #2 aberdeens when fishing minnows and No. 4s when jig fishing. Following…..

here in lies the dilema , some know and some don't but to be very sure it is quite common, large fish are often way more wary than small fish, this said they also often bite very lightly and very likely detect something amiss when a large gap hook gets a little "mouthing" , this can be seen on underwater videos all over the place and is very common for crappie to do . keep this in mind as well , I lose a very small percentage of fish that I hook and have never experienced a big gap hook outketchn a smaller hook when crappie fishing, larger bait profiles in many cases simply help conceal the point of the hook and thus also lesson the chance of accidental hookups with non living subjects .....
of course I don't do it for money and only ketch for fun , but to be very sure it all about the ketchn venue for me, more fish is a better day then less fish is my agenda .....

I pour my own jigs, so I use a #2 in all my jigs, not saying it better, it’s better it’s just what I am use to doing. I use it on 1/32, 1/24, 1/16 and also use a #2 hook for a minnow rig also. I just think it’s better with the bigger hooks, makes me think if I can get him to bite, I have a better chance of hooking him, maybe just something else in my warped mind. Just my 2 cents.

Ketchn my friend, this is the subject that started me to take notice and reading your posts, pranks, etc. The "Gold" as I have written before in your style of posts may not "Pop Out" to readers at first but the Experience Shared is embedded for sure. I was having a lot of trouble loosing jigs mostly on Ross Barnett fishing real thick submerged tree piles. You answered someone else's thread concerning hook size fishing the "Thick Stuff". I caught your drift, downsized to #6's, and you doubled my actual landed in the net, catch rate. Now I still loose fish due to them wrapping me up but hardly never from a pulled hook. Thanks for that. Now #4's are my go to hooks, #6's for Micros fishing the thick stuff. I do pour extra fine wire #2's for Tipping with a Shiner.

6 is the largest I use. I primarily stream fish, and as AH Said 8 is my primary and 10 works just fine as well.

Don't think I have any #8 hooks. Think I will get some.

When it comes to crappie fishing the only time I fish a #2 is when I'm fishing with an underspin bait with a 3" Keitech or hand tie blade bait. A 2" bait gets a #4 hook but my bread n butter sizes are smaller, down to a #10. PB White crappie was caught on a #8 jig and PB Black crappie was on a #10 sickle on December 30 in cold clear water. With these cold conditions the tiny 1" bait was something that fish couldn't resist. Crappie and any fish are not hungry and inactive most of the time and won't take the bigger baits but offer them a little snack and they suck it in.

I only use number 2 hooks. I like how they fit the baits I use.

I will tell you my experience in the matter. Go back 40 years ago when cane poles was the main tool to catchem. There was no way to pentrate bone. You attempted to hook them in the side of the mouth. They were called papermouths back then. If you wanna test my theory get you a 10 ft cane pole and rig it with a number 6 jig and get after em. I'm figuring with the mileage you have you got one laying around somewhere. Rofl. Nowadays we want small and needle sharp and the first few inches of hookset to mean something and good technique puts it in the roof of the mouth and you struggle to get it free.
