Lots of other places pronounce it crappie as well
Other than the fact that we pronounce it correctly, and everyone else pronounces it incorrectly, does anyone know of any other reason why we in NC and SC pronounce it as it's spelled, "crappie" and everywhere else they pronounce it "croppie"?
Asking for a friend...

NC & SC are not the only states sayin "Crap-ee". I've heard it pronounced that way in Tenn & Ala, too.
I grew up calling them "croppie", but still use both pronunciations.
According to the dictionary ... either pronunciation is correct.
According to history ... they were called "Krah peh" (the French Canadian pronunciation of Crapet)
There are many local nicknames. I've told the story where my Grandpa mentioned going fishing for "Newlights", and I thought we were going after some new, exotic fish that I'd never heard of in my preteen age. Then we went Crappie fishing, as per usual, and I realized he was using a really old nickname from his early days.![]()
I have no idea, at least that's politically correct...but Bless Their Hearts.
