    Default Cleaning reels

I got two good reels that have gotten stiff. What's the best way to clean them quickly. The guy that cleans reels is covered up till next week and I got a trip planned Tuesday and Wednesday

Last year I put down news paper, grabbed some reels and went to breaking down and cleaning. Next time I may drop them in the ultra sonic cleaner and see how that does them

The only trusted knowledge I have for breaking it down is which screwdriver to use. I'm no good at small parts. I prefer my pieces being picked up by a crane. I'm assuming you go through the side and not the top right?

Yes. There is a side cover on most all reels. Should be some YouTube videos on the reels you have showing disassembly. I use a lube called Reel Butter. Seems to be some pretty good stuff

No fast way to do it right.
If you have the patience, look up some you tube videos for your reels or something very similar. I usually snap photos as I dissemble and lay parts out in a row one by one as they come off and clean one by one as I put them back on in reverse order.

They are a bear to take apart and get back together properly, if mine quit and or get too squirrelly , they go to the garage and get to rest in the reel graveyard, just saying

I'm pretty sure I'm in that category.

DSJ you mentioned ultra sonic. For 90$ and a 10 minute drive I can have one in my hands. I was willing to pay 30$ to have a guy clean 2 reels. Whatcha think...should I try it?

I clean lots of things in the one I have. Firearms, pocket knives, watch bands, carburetors ( does a great job on those). Old grease and dirt doesn't stand a chance. Every nook and cranny gets cleaned. I just ordered a larger 6 liter one. All that being said I have not used one to clean reels yet. I would think you would want to drive the water left behind out with WD 40 or something similar then oil and grease it as you would normally. If I get time later I will see what I can find on the subject

For a long time now I have left the cleaning and servicing of reels to the professionals. Just an FYI...and you may already know it....Shimano and Daiwa USA have reel cleaning services. I used to send my Stradic in twice a year to be serviced. Many times Shimano will send you back a brand new reel at no cost to you other than the 30 dollar service fee you paid when you sent reel in. I was a recipient of several new Stradics over a 3 year period.

    Regards
