No question that you won't be wailing them into the wind for the issue that you describe, but that's really no different than any baitcasting situation (although it is admittedly easier to avoid issues with a 1/2 ounce spinnerbait). We'll see, you may be right.

I couldn't believe how far you can cast it at first. Just didn't make sense in my head. The way these new BFS reels are designed, you can literally cast it without your thumb on the reel and you rarely get a backlash.
It has to be the way the line comes off the reel compared to a spinning reel. Less drag through the eyelets I guess. Also, they have very shallow spools like the new dock skipping bass reels.
It is used it conjunction with my 10 different spinning rods with all different jig weights, lure styles etc. But it is an absolute blast if you were a bass guy who loves to throw baitcaster gear and now you can for crappie. Last November I caught 50 jumbos in 30 mph wind with the Kastking BFS and a 1/8 jig with a 2.5 Ned swimbait. No backlashes using 6lb mono and that was into the wind so I could control the boat. You have to try it to believe it.

Backlash for baitcaster, wind knot and line twisted for spinning. They both can be prevented more or less depends on experience and gears used. Is one better than another, depends on a lot of situations.

Good information. I got out to use mine a little bit this morning and got two Crappie on it. The other one was about half an inch longer than this one, but I forgot to take a photo before I tossed it back. As you suggested, it was in fact a blast.

I don't get on much anymore - just saw this topic. I have a couple light spinning rods in my boat rod box but have not used one in over two years. I grew up with baitcasters and will use one every chance I get over a spinning reel. I can cast 1/16 or 1/24 jigs as far as I need to and much more accurately than with a spinning rod. BFS is NOT UL fishing. For true UL, you need high end spinning gear. I could never throw a 1/64 jig on BFS. It works for most crappie fishing and is a pure joy for smallmouth. I sure enjoy any of my 6 BFS outfits. Different strokes.

This makes me think of when I was a young kid - I cut my teeth on 5000 sized abu garcias, and an ancient daiwa millionaire that I still have - on a ray scott signature fiberglass rod lol.
Bass lures commonly weighed 5/8 ounce. When the first shimano bantams came out, I tried and couldn’t cast them for beans. But later bought a bantam 1000 that I still have. Did find a use for it, throwing small jigs for Crappie.
I miss the 51/2 foot casting rods with the pistol grip. Does anyone even make one anymore? Seems like I haven’t seen one in a long time, even on low end rods.

Yes, I have one made by St Croix. It's a PFC 56LF 2-6Lb. I broke my 1st one and it was replaced. The new one has never been used. I will make someone a good deal if they want it.

They sell a ton of them in Japan…and to a lot of folks in the US who purchase out of Japan. Of course that’s not surprising since they are the ones who came up with BFS fishing.

    Regards

Man that’s tempting, but I bet shipping would be rough far as we are apart. Probably would be better for someone who could meet in person
