No way I could use a reel that bulky for my personal style of single pole fishing. ( long pole 12 &14 ft )
I stick with the low profile horizontal inline spool reels. These are fool proof, maintenance free.

I have a couple of Eagle Claw inline ice reels mounted on BnM Sam Heaton Super Sensitive Crappie Jig Poles (9' & 11') that I use drifting jigs and vertical jigging. Absolute love using them. Line twist is no longer a problem, but I have had the line (6# HiVis) jump under the spool twice over the last year. It takes two minutes to unscrew the spool retaining nut, clear the line, then reattach the spool to the reel frame. I used to run Mr. Crappie inline reels, but the retrieve on them is slow and the drag on them is much more jerky than the Eagle Claws. I'll stick with them until they give me reason to change.

I got the magnetic spool version of these reels in today - overnight from Amazon with free shipping.

I spooled it up and dropped the jig with the magnetic setting about halfway and no backlash!

Will have to actually fish with it, but I’m excited to try it out now! Thank you for all of the help and opinions!

it would appear that from what I see in the original images that the red star inside the handle is the setting for the drag , the reel would be pretty useless without some sort of drag tensioner on it and it appears that it is decent quality as well , how else would you set one up on the ice in a rod holder or tip up set up without something to keep it from free spooling ?
pretty cool looking reel for sure btw

Correct. The star is for the drag and the specs say the drag max is 10 pounds which is pretty darn good.

The new reel has a small thumb dial on the opposite side to increase or decrease the spool braking. Seems to work really good and on max, I can strip line out by hand without having the spool spin too fast causing backlash.

I’m fishing with it tomorrow to try it out and have high hopes for sure!

I really like the reel. I’m not using the “freespool” to drop my line because I’m using a line counter mounted on my rod for depth. I wanted to try it for the better gear ratio of 2.7:1 vs the 1:1 on my B&M reels.

I’ll need to use them a few more times to be completely comfortable with them, but they’re well built and smooth. I’m hoping they last a long time!

It doesn't have a feespool tensioner? All of my ice inline reels have them. My favorite is ironically the cheapest i have, the 13 fishing descent. It has a small knob that tightens the freespool so you do not backlash with bigger baits.
