Years ago I use to fish a spot on Tawakoni that was full of snakes. Carried a sawed off 410 in one hand and a cane pole in the other. The fish were not biting if you were not shooting.

Used to fish deep in the swamp in NC. Saw one monster cottonmouth that I dispatched with a 9 mm before he struck. Thick around as my arm. YUK!

I remember one year me and my brother caught some bluegill and left them in the fish basket overnight. Some how a snake got into the basket and swallowed one of the bluegill. Because of this was not able to get out the basket. Dad took one look at the situation and said leave the basket, fish and snake right where they are and we went home. I didn't want any parts of that serpent.
I was taught from a early age to watch where you put your hands and every step especially when stepping over a log.
I’ve had some close calls but ain’t been bit yet. ( worked full time in the woods about 15 years)

Fish Reelfoot in July and August if you want to see snakes!!!!
Every cypress tree with limbs has a few just hanging in them. Most are banded water snakes and non poisonous. Still kinda spooky.
Never had one drop into boat but I’m sure someone has.
Always see a few cottonmouth every trip. They are bigger than you would think and great swimmers. Aggressive if you mess with them.
The local bait house I go to has a photo of a 55 gallon drum completely full of cottonmouth but it is an old picture.
They serve a purpose in the ecosystem I guess like the gators in Florida.
Point being if your scared of snakes you shouldn’t fish Reelfoot in the summer!!
