Sad thread. I had to stop reading it, but I also had to post. I miss a lot of people and pets, but I miss these two most:

My dad. He died of heart disease at an early age…couldn’t get in a boat for a while after that…he taught me a lot and sure do miss him even after 42 years….what’s funny is that I have become him in so many ways….couldn’t figure out how to get the pic turned

Miss my first Mother in law. She was a great fishing partner as she loved it so. I could call her any day at 4:30 am and say get ready Mom I'm coming get you. When I got there, biscuits would be buttered and jellied, lunch would be packed. She had no problem ever staying as long as I felt. Took me years to get a cane poll out of her hand. She would hold it by the very end and reach as far as she could. Don't know how she did that all day. lol I finally got her casting a zebco 33 with a small crankbait, as she wanted to catch a "big" fish. I almost cried when she caught her first bass. It was only a pounder, but she beamed. Man what a memory. I miss you Mom , and I loved that you thought of me more as a son than sil. Honestly my favorite fishing partner ever, and I have had a few good ones.

Every time I launch my boat memories of past companions both human and fur babies float with me. I hope someday memories of me will float with others.

Dad and I never fished together much, and I haven’t lost any human fishing friends but I’m sure I will at some point, and I’m not looking forward to it. I don’t deal with loss like that too we’ll. But I have lost a few dogs that meant a lot to me. One in particular was Tiki. Long story short, she divorced my daughter and adopted me. She thought the sun rose and set on me. She was the first dog in my life that centered on me. She had to go home about 6 years ago, she was full of tumors. Two years later I found Piper and she has filled the large void that Tiki left behind, and I thank God for her all the time. Neither one travels well so they aren’t and haven’t been my fishing buddies, but that would have been icing on the cake. Both great dogs. I now understand why grown men cry like small children when something happens to their dog. I know I did.

I just lied to y’all. I just remembered Billy Ring. He and I met at the perfume counter while buying our wives Christmas presents. He was in my boat and we were friends til the day he passed. Brain cancer took him. Not fair. I’ve never met a finer person in my life.Name: FB6E6290-3CD4-4B67-91FA-94E65A663ED5.jpg

And Piper. Always sits next to me when I sit in my recliner til she gets cramped. She was a rescue and we believe her previous owner sat at the end of the couch with a table on the right and she sat on the left. She will not sit on my right in any chair or couch, has to be on the left side of me. I’m good with that.

I have no pictures in this phone of Billy Ring but if you look in the obituary section you might find one that I put there years ago. Jerry Hamilton also. When I moved to TN and caught the crappie bug, I met him at the ramp and he showed me some important things that I still use today. He was a production superintendent for Jack Daniels. He came home from fishing one day and passed away in his recliner watching the Volunteers stomp someone on TV. Just quietly slipped away. It seems God liked him too and took him easy.

I’ve been blessed with many good fishing partners. I hope I go first.

Me n lil darling cried like babies when we had to put our beloved Zoe down. We called her Mrs. Milkbones cause she loved them as a daily treat. No interest in fish but loved to ride.

Got to thinking about this post and thought I’d share what I think is a great story. First let me say how much I miss fishing with my late nephew. I have never run into anyone who liked crappie as much as him. While he liked the catching part I think he much more enjoyed the eating part. Back in January 2001 I had to take early retirement. I was only 49 years old. So I bought a boat…actually had 3 boats during a 4 year period. I had a cottage in West TN and was fishing the Pickwick tailrace 5 days a week without fail. In April of 2001 my then father in law decided he wanted to learn to fish. Well I was perfectly happy fishing by myself and was really dreading having him come along. But as my then wife and I discussed it would probably only be for one trip. I mean the man had never fished in his life. I wasn’t looking forward to having to baby sit him either. He had been in dire straits medical wise only a year before. Basically having his heart repaired…the doctors had told us he would probably would not survive the operation. I told him I would be leaving the house at 5:30 and if he was not there I would leave without him. To tell you the truth I didn’t think he would show. Well at 5 he was siting out in my driveway. For the next 4 years we fished Monday through Friday without fail and the only thing that kept us off the water was icy roads. We didn’t miss many days. We fished for everything but what he liked the most was fishing for crappie. He learned about tackle…what to buy and so on. If we got back late….which we always did…he would stay up til midnight cleaning those fish…and be right on time the next morning. I wound up very much enjoying fishing with him. At the end of 2004 his daughter and I divorced and I left West TN. About a a year or so later I got word he had cancer. I went back to see him and during our conversation he told me how much it meant to him those years we fished together. Told me it was the best years of his life. I’m sure it happens but I’ve not heard of many who take up fishing as a serious endeavor that late in life. That was back when I went no matter what and he always showed.

    Regards
