Yup, it's a thing, if you invest enough time fishing you're going to lose gear.
in about 2004 was drifting a river on my Fishcat 9 DLX with a custom rod built for me by an acquaintance, as I rounded a bend the line snagged, I quickly placed the rod between my knees and started rowing upstream to to try and unhook, should have just cut the line, instead I tightened the drag, yup you guessed it, the mono stretched far enough then overcame my resistance and to this day that rod sits at the bottom of the Deschutes River.
It's a learning curve.

Wow, 54’ is deep and with it sliding down and more than likely not straight down, it could be in a larger area to search.
I lost on out of a rod holder from a fish and made an gps mark to return a week later. It was only 17’ but still took me 30min to find with my hook. I made something at work to return to the area and drag the bottom. I was lucky it grabbed the line on a retrieve and got my rod back. Good luck to ya.
