Crappie Rod for a baitcasing reel.

Ive been fishing alot with a gentleman that runs a 10' rod with a baitcaster and braid on it. For our style of fishing with livescope it seems to work better than my 6' rods with spinning reels. I know what baitcast reel I want but it seems most rods are set up for spinning reels. Any suggestions?

I run baitcasters on all my jig rods 9,10, and 12 ft.. No matter what brand rod and I haven't had any issues.

I would suggest getting a 10-12ft spinning rod/reel for Livescope "flippin". Unless you're positioning the boat almost directly over top of the fish and simply dropping the jigs down to them, a spinning outfit gives you greater distance flipping the jigs to the more skittish fish.

The biggest "advantage" I know of in using a baitcast reel is less line coil.

But if you "must" and/or wish to "get like" your friend ... a baitcast reel will function just fine on a spinning rod, though it may be a little cumbersome to use. Just make sure the outfit is handle end heavy and not rod tip end heavy, otherwise it's going to be quite tiresome to use and strain your wrist over any extended period of use.

I Livescope flip double jig rigs with a 12' spinning outfit, and have a 8' spinning outfit (single jig) as backup or for distance casting use. My Livescope mentor buddy flips double jig rigs with a 10' rear seat spinning outfit. Only time I've used baitcast reels on spinning rods was when I first started Pushing jigs, and those were replaced with 14' rods & Line Counter reels.

The only "negative" factor I've heard about in using a baitcast reel with a spinning rod is concerning the spline of the rod blank. Rods are made to bend more easily in one direction, so you may be putting more strain on the rod when using the opposite reel style. Worst case scenario in that case is .... you "could" break your rod.

There is no flipping in my style. We position over the top and drop jigs down to them.

Just mentioned it because on some lakes I fish you can do that ... others you'd be fishing empty water (even if the fish are 20+ft deep).

I have a rear seat 13 foot acc crappie stix cross over rod i use for livescoping. I have had both bait caster & spinning reel on it. I really like the bait caster but can get down so much quicker with the spinning reel & can fish a lot deeper way easier so that's what i went with. Also less arm fatigue for the rod i have. If dropping on them shallow a baitcaster may be best.

Kind of leaning towards this one. If I dont like it I cant just swap back to a spinning reel like some had mentioned.

I checked out a new baitcasting ultralight rod by Jenko at the Crappie Expo. Will Robey threw a 1/16 oz jig at least 40 feet with zero effort. He was using a tiny baitcaster reel and braid line. He had sold all of the rods they had at the show except his demo. I tried to buy it.

I got the Todd Huckabee Elite. Ive had the chance to use it several times now and I love it. I paired it with the crappiemax baitcasting reel and 10# stealth spiderwire.
