Default How do I dock shoot?

How do I start dock shooting? I have some medium 6 foot rods and jigs 1/8, 1/16, 1/32oz jigs with a variety of plastics. Can I use any of that or do I have to get specific dock shooting rod excetra? Thanks in advance!!

I know they make specific dock shooting rods and people have different methods that work. For me I’ve been using a 5 foot ugly stick ultra light with hi vis line and shooting as small as 1/64 oz weights size 8 hooks with 1.25 inch Bobby garlands and having some good success. I do all of my fishing from a kayak so I do have the advantage of being really close to the water and I’m able to be very stealthy coming up on docks. I will attach a link with a video of my setup. Good luck to you and tight lines dock shooting is a lot of fun.

You can use the rod you have. I know of folks that use up to 7' rods. The method isn't hard, and many videos of the method on you tube. I suggest a bit of accuracy practice in the yard as most folks don't like the errant cast on thier docks or boats. However with practice it's not hard to get it down...

Medium rods are a little stiff. I would use a light action. 1/8 oz jig heads are a little heavy unless your really trying to get the bait down deep. I would stay between a 1/16 & 1/32. Use hivis line either 4# or 6# test. They will give the best travel without breaking too easy. And practice at home. And carry a bunch of jigheads

A little practice out in the yard. A bucket, a coffee can, under the garage door raised up a few inches, under a chair, the deck in the back yard. You name it all make great practice. Get proficient in the yard. Then get on the boat and give it a whirl. Boat control is a large part of it. Got a buddy that wants to shoot with you? Great take turns keeping the boat in place while the other one shoots. Shakespeare makes a Micro lite series of rods. Cork handle, light action, and $20 at most Walmarts. Shoot long enough and the dock will claim it's pound of flesh. Get to close and let the rod tip slap the dock and it will break. It is some of the most fun fishing that I have done. Way back in the dark recesses of the docks lives the monsters. Most importantly go and enjoy yourself.
