I’ve had good success in the summer fishing around docks at night. White streamers with some flash usually all I need.

I was gifted an old, refurbished 5wt glass rod some years ago by a member on another site. I got me an inexpensive reel and line at wally world. I've never had formal lessons of any kind. but I break it out, knock the cobb webs off and try a couple times a year. Instead of an actual fly, I tie on a piece of yarn. But my old eyes is having a really hard time with that cobb web sized 6x tippet line and trying to tie a knot...I have an easier time tying a knot with 2 lb test line, and that's not easy either...just sayin'.

IMO, there's no need to go below 3X for bluegill or crappie.

Don't torture yourself with 6X. Most trout guys don't even go that low. LOL

I think that is very true. The beauty of blue gills is that they are very forgiving of lousy casting and mistakes, and you can learn and catch fish. 3x will do you nicely. It’s a win win, and I suppose a lose lose for the gill!

Thank you for that info Fredo, and BobC. When I got that, it was what was available, so went with it. Still learning. What I have in equipment may not be the norm, maybe frowned upon by some. But I don't sit on the couch and wish I had...True health issues have slowed me down a bit, but they haven't knocked me out the game. Not sure if My local Walmart don't have most stuff available, or the dept. manager don't order it, but we have 7 or 8 Walmart stores scattered around town and still the fishing dept. can't and don't have a lot of needed items. Oh, if i want to try to land a whale, or have the need for 2-3 oz lead weights theirs plenty of that stuff, but for fly fishing or light to ultra light stuf, it's a joke...lightest line I can buy in town is 8 lb. No 6, 4, or even Heaven forbid, 2 lb...just not here. And to be truthful, I really really don't like ordering on line.

Here’s a dirty little secret: you don’t have to buy expensive tapered leaders and tippet. You can easily make your own leaders out of plain mono. Use 4-6# mono for tippet.

I guarantee you the bluegill won’t care. LOL

Yep I use mono as a tippet also. Never saw the need to be a fly fishing purist. Heck I throw a trout magnet with my setup.

    Good casting tips for fiberglass:

This YT channel (Echo Fly Fishing) has several other videos on casting fiberglass rods.

    Good luck!
