I was gifted an old, refurbished 5wt glass rod some years ago by a member on another site. I got me an inexpensive reel and line at wally world. I've never had formal lessons of any kind. but I break it out, knock the cobb webs off and try a couple times a year. Instead of an actual fly, I tie on a piece of yarn. But my old eyes is having a really hard time with that cobb web sized 6x tippet line and trying to tie a knot...I have an easier time tying a knot with 2 lb test line, and that's not easy either...just sayin'.
Thank you for that info Fredo, and BobC. When I got that, it was what was available, so went with it. Still learning. What I have in equipment may not be the norm, maybe frowned upon by some. But I don't sit on the couch and wish I had...True health issues have slowed me down a bit, but they haven't knocked me out the game. Not sure if My local Walmart don't have most stuff available, or the dept. manager don't order it, but we have 7 or 8 Walmart stores scattered around town and still the fishing dept. can't and don't have a lot of needed items. Oh, if i want to try to land a whale, or have the need for 2-3 oz lead weights theirs plenty of that stuff, but for fly fishing or light to ultra light stuf, it's a joke...lightest line I can buy in town is 8 lb. No 6, 4, or even Heaven forbid, 2 lb...just not here. And to be truthful, I really really don't like ordering on line.
