Around 99% of what I catch are black crappie, so that's what I prefer.

White crappie to catch; black crappie to eat
Black crappie to catch, white crappie to eat
Black crappie for fishing and eating
White crappie for fishing and eating
Well, I've only seen black crappie in the waters I fish so with that qualifier, I went with blacks for both catchin' and eatin'!

We have both. I prefer white crappie, they are way more aggressive and hit so much harder. Also the whites grow quicker than the blacks, so a 10" white crappie here is probably 5 years old whereas a 10" black crappie could be 8-10 years old. Way better to keep the eater size fast growing fish.

I catch mostly white around here so prefer black as I don’t catch them as much. Would be opposite if I caught more black than white. As far as taste, no difference. I do prefer smaller fish over larger fish when filleting and eating. A good 11-12” is perfect. Anything smaller or bigger I’m usually throwing back.

As far as eating, doesn't matter. Blacks seem to run when hooked, whites seem like the thump is harder and they pull like a catfish.

Lake Nimrod, Ar. where I live. Used to be predominately all White Crappie. Over the years the Black Crappie have flourished and make up about 20% of my daily catch. Most black crappie are caught tight to brushpiles and other manmade structures while most roaming or suspended fish are white crappie. The black crappie used to be pretty small but the last year or so I have caught many good "keeper" black crappie. My son even had his big fish be a black crappie during a June tournament here.
I'm real excited about the prospect of larger black crappie here over the next few years.
