    Default SPEED HELP

Hey guys, I have a 2002 40hp 2 stroke mercury on a 165 stick steer made by fisher. Looks like a tracker. Its a pretty heavy boat and has wood decking in it. But I am only getting 24-26mph out of it. Where I have been fishing the most is a 12 mile boat ride. I am needing to cut that ride time down alot to increase my fishing time. Any mechanics out here know if this is an appropriate speed for my 40hp or are there things I can modify or alter to be sitting around 40mph?

I used to own a skeeter alum. with 40 hp on it and my speed was 24-26 so i think you are getting about all it will do.
I would agree with you, but then we would both be WRONG !!!!

I agree with BJH. I can do 36mph in my 18ft on slick water no wind and down stream.

I ain’t no mechanic but no way you going to get the kind of speed you’re talking about…not even close. I have a 1454 Xtreme with a 40 HP four stroke and I get 32 MPH with just me in the boat. That’s pretty darn good for this boat.

    Regards

agree with all the above your not going to get 40 mph out of that motor on that boat. a jack plate would help a little but not that much.

My stick had a 25 and it would do 22 mph all day long. Tried a taller prop and lost hole shot and got 3 mph. Not worth the trouble. I always wanted more speed but after looking into it gave up. You’ve got a nice boat but ir is what it is.

we used to run lots of smaller boats with 40eez pushing them , my 13 foot whaler with an old 40 would run a bit fast , but it was styrofoam and the motor was rebuilt a bit heavier than 40 , it still only ran around low 30 range and the other rigs ran in the range yours is running .
Sometimes a different prop will get ya a few extra mph , might try that ?
My suggestion is find a closer launch , that is what I would do for sure

I agree. Find a closer place to launch or fish. Or leave earlier!

So you want to go faster? Sounds like a bigger motor would be needed. Just Thinking out loud.
