Backing, braid or mono?

I usually do not back mine. Most crappie sized reels are full from a spool of braid. Either should work well for backing. If I expected whatever fish I was fighting to spool me enough to get to the backing. I would prefer braid in that instance

the braid folks often tell me they use mono for backing to keep the braid from spinning on the spool .
not sure if that is the norm ,but I have tried it both ways and the mono under it made it work much better .

Thanks guys, I am using Berkley 8lb braid that comes in 150 yard spools. It is on sale at Cabelas. I have been really impressed so far. Cast great and no wind knots.I was wondering if it would dig in the backing less with braid or mono. I use the 2500 size reels for the larger spool when shooting docks so 150 yards will not fill the spool without backing.

I do use mono backing on a larger reel. I use it for filler. I was always told to keep it from spinning on the spool. Don't use it on smaller reels. This is the way I was taught and just always did it that way. I don't know if, there is a wrong it right way.

I put some mono on my spool then tie the braid to it with an Alberto knot. This keeps the braid from slipping on the spool.

Fill halfway up with mono, then braid,put both on as tight as possible so they wont dig in.

Never used backing. Been using mostly braid for about 8 years now for crappie.

Low diameter mono joined with a double uni knot is a go-to solution. If you have a really small spool, a strip of electrical tape on the spool will allow the braid to bite into the tape and not slip on the slick spool if that is the reason you're looking at backing.
