I've done it often using a slip float.
Those pool noodle floats work well. I use slip bobbers exclusively.

To maintain a depth I think a pegged float is best. Every time I tap a slip float, it rises some
When I was first shown a jig n float we caught a good many fish, some very nice. Weightless cork and a 1/32 jig with a white curl tail. About 16” deep, a cast was made near a cluster of dollar bonnets. He ripped the cork back towards us about a foot and as it settled back the float would go down. We got on the front deck of his Gambler and gave them a good spanking. Point is, slow isn’t always the answer. I was truly taken to school that day.

I’ve been using Leland's Lures Trout Magnet E-Z Trout Float. Small and very sensitive. Just about an inch long.

Foam has a split for easy on/off. Also has a hole thru the center stem for slip bobbing.
