Default Mono or braid and several other questions

New to Crappie so I have a few questions. I think most people are probably using 4 # test but let me know if I’m wrong. Are most people using braid or monofilament? Also i usually Buy tackle in bulk so where’s the best place to purchase bulk line?

I really think it depends on what type of fishing someone is doing as to what type of line they choose. I use braid when I am dock shooting. Other times I will use mono for different presentations

For me, braid (10lb ish, chartreuse if I can find it) and a 4-6 lb clear mono leader, 18-24", FG knot. I cast jigs for crappie about 95% of the time. Sensitivity of braid is the thing for me. Plus if you hook into something other than a crappie you have enough strength to get it pulled out of there.

As DSJ stated above depends on the situation. I prefer mono and have from 2-8 lb on my reels. I do have some braid but I'm not really that big a fan of it personally. Nothing beats a good ultra lite setup with light line for sporty challenge. But I'm not using that when I'm fishing brush....lol.

I will also add most of the rods I have braid on at light or med light action. On my ultralight stuff I usually use mono. Braid is extremely sensitive. It transmits the slightest thump into a jolt of the rod.

I’ve always used mono myself 4-6#. I’ve never ventured into trying braid sometimes I’ve wondered if I should. I think I just get to comfortable with what I’m used to, but the mono does work well.

I'm using both mono & braid, but as mentioned .... it's according to what technique & equipment are being utilized.

My casting outfits have 6# mono ... my Pushing outfits have 30# braid or 20# mono, both with 6# leaders.

When I started Crappie fishing, back in the 1950's, it was 8# mono & minnows. I eventually graduated to 4# mono & jigs, and am now mostly using 6# mono & jigs.

I would think bulk line purchases thru Amazon, or "on sale/reduced prices" sales on the brand's websites would be the way to go ... unless you have a BPS/Cabela's, Sportsmen's Whse, Academy Sports & Outdoors, or local sports outlet in your neighborhood that carries bulk spools. In either case, price shop online & compare total cost to see which option affords the best prices.

Mono is cheap enough unless your using a bunch of rods and reels to just put on new if it gets to unmanageable. Also Check out Blakemore Real Magic. TTI Blakemore is a site sponsor. Bass Pro link below. As Slab says “support those that support us.”
