Default Need insight to Pulling Crank Baits

My normal style is single poling over piles and spyder Rigging with 8 bull whips. This year I want to try my hand had pulling crank baits. my question is two fold. one- what poles do I use? Do I use stiffer bass type baitcasting rods or my trolling rods which are all 14' and seem to week for pulling crank baits. second question is depth and speed? how deep and what speed do you guys go?

I use 4 poles. Med heavy or med power. 6.5 to 9 ft long. Some baitcaster and some spinning reels. I experiment with speed but usually ends up in 1.3 - 1.7 range. Depth is 1-2 ft above where the graph shows the fish depth.

I don't "Pull" cranks ... I "Push" cranks .... out the front of the boat, 2rods in rod holders on each side, 14' rods w/line counter reels, 20# mono & 30# braid main lines, 5' leader line, 2oz trolling sinker attached between main line & leader with duo-loc clips, at a speed of 1.5-1.8mph. I measure the line below the water & multiply by 0.6 to approximate the depth my cranks are running. I prefer Pushing over Pulling for two reasons .... less line out = less chance of losing a fish reeling in & I can make tighter turns & quicker course corrections.

Well, that's the way I was taught how to Push cranks. In actuality, even after inheriting a ton of cranks & incorporating many of my cranks from my Bass fishing days and the trolling weights (inherited & purchased), I only got around to Pushing cranks a few times on my own. Biggest reason why was the purchase of a Livescope/93sv Garmin setup so now the majority of my fishing is casting and flipping jigs "video game fishing".

I pull 8 B’n’M PST’s out the back of the boat; an 8’, 10’, 12’, & 14’ on each side. I use line counter reels and normally stagger the line out like 70, 80, 90 & 100 and speed varies between 1.5 and 1.8 until I figure out which depth is working best. Good luck!

Pulling cranks is addictive so be careful. M R Dux is very good and will and has shared most any detail needed. Low end baitcasters work best IMHO by keeping the line twist to a minimum.

Be sure to get a variety of PICO cranks. I prefer them, but still occassionally use Bandit 300’s and Arkies. And sometimes even in super shallow water use square bill PICO’s. You will need a few. 3-4 flats not included in this pic.

Take a couple of days to read but every thing you want to know about pulling cranks is in there. Take notes, start small and build from there. Be warned it is addictive and get expensive .
