Vicki and I adopted a 1 year old Boykin female thru Boykin Rescue in October. She is everything we had hoped for—crate trained, housebroken, beautiful. At 30 pounds she is our first house dog. My job is to train her in obedience and calming down around new people. She gets so excited she jumps and even wets herself around our granddaughter!

I’ve trained several labs over the years to be good citizens. Savy is going to be a challenge in that regard. I had hoped to get her in the boat last fall but even now she can’t be trusted off the leash. Until she is steady in that regard I will not trust her in my boat with clients.

Once I’m back on my feet and driving after my shoulder replacement, I plan on putting her on a serious obedience plan. I want to introduce her to my boat slowly. I’ve already had her in the boat in the garage a couple of times. The 23’ Excel Storm Cat will be great for her to find space out from under foot but also plenty of room for her to find trouble. She will probably fish with Vicki and Me alone this year.

One of my labs, Kutter, became a trusted fishing partner who rarely let my boat leave the garage without being along. I hope to get Savy to that point soon. I think the main thing is to let her mature out of her current puppy stage. My labs were puppies until 2-2.5 years. Since we don’t know exactly how old Savy is, I’ll depend a lot on her letting me know when she wants to be an adult.
Thanks for sharing. Sounds a lot like Annabelle. They found her on the side of the road pregnant. She’s a sweet girl and very smart. Generally she minds pretty well but there a a few areas that need work. Crate and house trained and maybe the biggest thing, has sweet disposition. Vet estimates that she is about 3 yrs old. As smart as she is I bet I can make a fishing buddy out of her. I hope so!

My beagle mix absolutely loves the boat. Word of caution however… when you get close to shore, make sure to keep a close eye on the pup… as mine once decided to take a leap when we were about 10 feet off the bank and I ended up chasing her through the woods for about 20 minutes till I finally caught up with her when she needed to potty… lol. She still goes on the boat quite frequently but is now attached to said boat at all times Name: IMG_8942.jpg

This knucklehead has jumped in a few times but the handle on the vest makes it really easy to snatch him back on deck.Rescue dog

A nice setup, Jman. Secure but very quick release if necessary.

I could take my pug but his snoring might scare the fish off.
The rat terrier would probably take off exploring at the boat ramp and make me go find her and miss some fishing time.
