Default A little off topic but still Crappie related

I posted about a month ago regarding a new family member. Finally named him Hank!!

He is a good dog and minds well but still a lot of puppy in him.

Just searching for any suggestions on how to acclimate him to the boat.

Practice in the garage while on the trailer????
Go to trolling motor lake first and operate with remote while on back deck or floor setting beside him??

Never had a dog on board before and really want a crappie dog partner. Name: IMG_3838.jpg

For 4 years I had a chocolate lab on the boat with me 5 days a week without fail. I wish I could give you words of wisdom but I have none. He was just a pup when I started but I never had any issues with him. He loved being in the boat. But he hated it when I would open it up. From day one if I was fishing standing timber or stumps he would constantly bark at the wood. Never did understand why he did that. I attribute my luck to the dog. I think I just had one that was exceptionally smart. I kept him in the house and he trained his self. I would say just take him out and see. I think you’ll find out pretty quick if the dog takes to it. Best of luck.

    Regards

    Lonnie84,
I’ve also had Bassett hounds for the last 23 years.
Never had any of them on the boat.
Only had 1 that rode in the golf cart but that was years ago.
Put our last one down 10 months ago and got Hank from the local shelter.
    He is our first non-Bassett.
Thought a rescue was the way to go this time.
    Thanks
    Chuck

Outdoors...wind in their face...time spent with the pack alpha...things flopping around in the boat to harass....How could a dog not love that. Just remember to pack them a snack, some water, and somewhere for shade. Yeah they gonna bark at the engine and other things for no apparent reason. But they will get better.
Soon they will beat you to the truck when they see the boat hooked.

I got an older gentle Spaniel that just lays around and naps. TILL you crank the big motor then she races to the bow and stands their like a hood ornament....crazy...

    Go for it

First time I took my Brittany on the boat years ago, he also barked at the stumps and standing timber. He finally couldn’t take it anymore and jumped in after them. When he hit the water and turned around, the look on his face was priceless. It was a look of pure terror & oh no, what have I done. 20 years ago & still makes me laugh. On future boat trips he would bark at them but not jump in. Lol. Hank is a good looking dog. Hope he loves the boat and you & him have years of fun, successful fishing trips!

I have no smarts on having a dog in the boat. My wife goes nuts when I talk about it due to the gator factor so I don’t push it. I do want to thanks you for getting a shelter dog, And it looks to me like you got a good one. Smart looking. Both of my dogs are rescues, found abandoned. There’s no amount of money that I’d take for either one. The puppy thing, my older dog is now about 13 and still cuts up like she did when she was two. If you’re lucky she’ll never lose it. One thing that ran through my mind was a vest for him. He will probably swim well but the vests usually come with a handle that will come in handy if he does go in. Good dogs are hard to find and looking out for them is easy with a little thought. Good luck with him, I hope he turns out to be you boat pal.

You’ve got a couple good looking K-9 buddies too.
Taking Hank to Feeder Supply soon to size up a pdf.
He’s already jumping in Land Rover when rear door is opened.
Stays put and doesn’t try to climb over back seat to come up front with me. Just looks out side and rear window.
    He’s coming along fine.
    Thanks Skeetbum

One thing for sure, a dog with a fish hook in his mouth or any where else is not a fun thing to deal with. A dog out of control, especially in a boat is a real pain. Can ruin a fishing trip real quick. Yes, get him use to being in the boat in the garage. Take him to the lake and on a leash, teach him to get in and out of boat. If he wants to bite fish bait or fish, leave him at home.

Yes on both thoughts. Let him run around in the boat in the garage. Go to the TM only lake first, see what he does there before deciding on whether to take him on a bigger boat with a motor.
