    I've done this before, crappie are perfect for this lol. I recommend pinching the barb tho, gets Awkward squeezing a larger fish thru a crack.

    Yeah have had a few tight squeezes, if one gets stuck before you get it out likely the resident otter will snatch it, he’s become so adept at stealing from fish baskets got to keep them in buckets.

    lost one or 3 larger fish in this type of manner
    sometimes the cooperation level is a bit low
    and the space is a bit tight

    Seen a TV show (I think) of a "pro angler" catching Crappie thru the cracks like that. Also saw him catch Crappie "nesting/spawning" on the lower unit fins of some of the big outboard motors on the boats moored at this marina/dock. Can't remember who it was, but it might have been our friend Russ Bailey.

    Why not get permission to cut a small trap door there and put a lock on it with two keys. You and dock owner. Would only take an hour to do and you could then experience what ice fishing is like.
