There are worse thing to spend $$$ on. My wife watches me too and the laughs when I pick up a new item. I am cutting back this year!

Hey, I am not complaining about spending the money. That is the wife's job. I am trying to prepare for retirement or the apocalypse, whichever comes first.

I thought about saying that but refrained, lol We all need something to help with our "mistakes".

I do agree with your idea of spending as little as needed tho. I have a Shakespeare rod that I use more than anything. My first rod I ever bought cost $5.00. (Granted I was 10, but it was my money I earned) My dad gave me a record half-bell reel for it. If I can find where I hid it I will use it again. At least once. .

I love the Shakespeare rods, think I got my first micro spin combo in 1999 ish when I was 8, live with a creek 40 feet from my back door. Amazing how long they lasted. I have a pretty cool vintage combo I just put together and will make a thread on here.

It shouldn't .... but be sure and make the first wraps on the reel spool with some old mono line. Braid by itself can "spin" around the spool when under pressure, so the mono gives it something to dig into so it don't slip.

I have a couple of suggestions for anyone using braid : buy a small pair of Fiskar Scissors to cut the braid (cuts it blunt, which makes it easier to poke thru the jig hook eye -- and a small dowel rod (like 6" long x 1/2" thick) to use to wrap the braid around and pull your jigs free from snags. DO NOT use your hand/fingers ... braid will cut you BAD !! And I don't advise using the cork or foam covered rod handles, either, as it can cut thru them, too.
