I had so many addictions, I ended up having to give up the archery and gun hunting to focus more on crappie…glad I did too,,,I was getting old way too fast.

I have the remnants of many hobbies myself. The worst of all was metal detecting. Digging holes is hard work and here I took it up as a hobby . I am much better off

Jack, I too metal detect for a hobby and love it. It's much like fishing as you never know what you'll catch/dig. it's very relaxing if you do it as a hobby and not as a way to get rich. It fills in the time when I can't go fishing. This year so far I have found over 1200 coins, 2 sterling silver rings, and a 14 K gold engagement ring with a very nice stone. I average a trip a week that last no more than 3 hours because as you said it can be work if you over do it. I also help others find lost objects.
