    Default Rod for fishing minnows?

I’m looking for a rod for fishing minnows. The way we fish, we are making short casts with a bobber to submerged cover. The cover is typically 6-12ft deep. We keep the boat away from the top of it and watch it on Livescope. We use a bobber stopper to control the depth.

I’ve tried different rods, and haven’t found one the bobber stopper will go through the guides of without hanging. The eyes are just too small. (I’ve tried several different brands/shapes/sizes of bobber stoppers.

Anyone have a recommendation for a rod that will work well? I don’t want to use long rods. I take my kids and those long poles are just too much for them to handle.

I have a buddy who makes custom rods and I’m open to having him build something if I can’t find anything.

What type of bobber stop are you using and what rods have you used?

Tie a bobber stop with heavy mono. Or use the green ones from Mr crappie.

I’ve tried several different brands of the rubber bobber stoppers - I don’t remember every brand. Some were round, some were more oblong.

I’ve tried a couple different St Croic rods and a couple cheaper Bass Pro brands. All in the 5.5-6.5’ range.

I use the little rubber egg shaped ones. If you buy these make sure you get the right size for your line. I get some at Bass Pro that come with the bobber stop and bead all together(see link). For casting like you are I use Mr Crappie Speed Shooter Combos, they come in two lengths. Hope this helps.

I also like the rubber egg shaped stops. The others have proved frustrating for me. As far as rods I have no answer. I will say that I prefer a 6’6” or 7’ cuz I sometimes like a fixed float. To fix the guide issue, replace them with the ones that work. It’s not rocket science and with a little thinking and research you can get by with not many tools. Gorilla clear 5 minutes epoxy and a blow drier will put the coating on the windings that will last pretty good. If you want store bought you’re going to have to figure out what size hole they need to have and make sure that the rods you look at have them. You might look at the Shakespeare micro series rods, they work good for the task for me.

Try a B&M 75 anniversary rod. The 7 1/2 ft model should work fine for you.
