Rod and reel for vertical jigging

I'm just getting into vertical jigging and really like it, feeling that peck or thump is pretty exciting. I'm pretty set on the first rod I want to buy,, a ACC Crappie Stix 10' rear seat, but I'm not sure of the reel. I'm leaning toward a Bonehead BH 80 spinning reel but haven't seen a lot of reviews about it. Any help or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Lots of ways to do it and lots of rigs to get it done. I fished 50+ fow about 32’ deep with 8’ rods with a moderate tip in the winter on standing timber. The thump was massive!! I use a 10’ Sam Heaton with a rear reel seat when dipping floating weeds. No wrong way, just different.

This is correct. The reel is only a line holder. Crappie are not big fighters so I see no need on spending lots of cash for a reel. Something like a Shimano Sienna will fit the bill quite nicely.

Solo is the best as long as you ain't going any deeper than the rod.

But my opion for the best rod and best reel is all of them. Buy them all. Im boosting the economy one rod at the time.

Get a reel that "balances" the rod (by its weight). Too light and the rod will be tip heavy and wear on your wrist. I recommend doing this for any rod/reel outfit that's going to be used for "rod in hand" techniques. While I don't do much "vertical jigging", I'd think the same factors are as relevant as they would be for a casting outfit.

I vertical jig with a 10' B'n'M Tree thumper and I like it. Rear seat and good sensitivity.
That said, I handled some ACC stix at the Expo and one like you described will be my next jigging rod.

I am with you on the fact that correct balance makes or breaks how a rod fishes to me

I use a BnM Russ Bailey 10 footer with a Pflueger President. It balances out very well and you can’t beat the quality of both products.
